In connection with building and construction in Greenland, it is generally necessary to blast rocks to make room for the construction. In addition, blast rock is a widely used building material in Greenland used for fillings, road and dam constructions (fx for runways), for foundations, and as aggregate in concrete and asphalt, etc. Rock and blast rock quality and properties are therefore of crucial importance for location, design, construction, operation and maintenance of old and new construction projects in Greenland. However, for economic reasons, this type of knowledge is only available for the largest construction projects (airport constructions, certain port projects, etc.), and the results are generally difficult to obtain.
FOSS gathers all available data on rock and blast rock properties from previous building and construction projects in Greenland and makes data easily accessible to industry stakeholders. In addition, FOSS has identified where further research into rock and blast rock properties is needed and is used for teaching at Arctic DTU Sisimiut - Ilinniarfeqarfik Sisimiut.
